In November of last year, we ran a quick test – Email Marketing Success Tester – for all email marketers, to test their know-how and awareness of email marketing strategies. We promised to follow up with an analysis of the Tester’s results. Today we proudly announce that our free report – The State Of Email Marketing In SMBs 2011 – is ready for download.

The study set out to analyze the implementation of the most popular email marketing practices, strategies and trends amongst the SMB marketers. It tried to answer the following questions:

Which email marketing tools are the most and the least popular among marketers?

How do business units of different sizes implement email marketing strategies?

What are the major differences in utilization of email marketing strategies by specific industry sectors?

To complete the report we’ve analyzed answers from 600 marketers regarding lead generation, segmentation and list hygiene, newsletter optimization and deliverability. Our overall goal was to find out how many marketers are aware of and actually utilize the various optimization strategies.

The overall results confirm the growing awareness of advanced email marketing strategies amongst the SMB marketers, as the average number of “yes” answers to all questions is above 50%. However the discrepancies in results for particular strategies prove that some of them are highly popular, whereas others – still overlooked.

Here are a few selected insights from the report:

The majority of respondents are diligent about legal compliance and subscription-based lead generation: 79% use sign-up forms to grow lists; 71% provide unsubscribe forms in their newsletters; 72% use a confirmed opt-in subscription model.

Quite a large group indicates that they have high deliverability (62%), low complaint ratio (69%) and effective delivery to major client inboxes (68%).

Most respondents realize the importance of regular mailings (70%), personalization (58%), compelling subject line (68%), and stats analysis (61%).

The industry that’s most proficient in implementation of email marketing strategies is the publishing sector with top average results of 65%.

Surprisingly, only 50% of the researched marketers use some type of email-to-social collaboration. This means that, even if their brand is present on various social networks, cross-channel marketing is practically non-existent – a shame, given the benefits it can offer.

The Report is divided into 3 handy sections, showing the results by marketing strategy, by business size sector, and by business industry, to make scanning and comparative analysis easy. We hope that it will provide you with some valuable insights and answers to your questions about implementation of email marketing strategies by your industry competitors.

And all you have to do is click this link to download.

Enjoy the reading!

This is the second (here’s the first) in our series of GetResponse customer spotlights. If you are subscribed to our newsletter than you already have an invitation so please feel free to reply with your answers. We can’t promise that we’ll be able to publish every response we get because of the huge response we’ve gotten, but we sure will try!

This time around the GetResponse spotlight shines on Jon Bard, self proclaimed, “Fightin’ Bookworm-in-Chief” at The CBI Clubhouse — The Essential Children’s Writing Resource.

Can you tell us a little about your business and your experience using email marketing?

We help ordinary people learn how to write and publish children’s books. We’ve been doing it for 22 years, and our business has evolved into a full-fledged online community for children’s writers. You’ll find it at http://cbiclubhouse.com.

Tell us about the success you’ve experienced as a result of using GetResponse.

Using GetResponse, we’ve built our ezine readership to more than 44,000 aspiring writers. We provide mostly content with some special offers mixed in, and the response is always tremendous. Readers like the look of the HTML template we’ve chosen and we’ve enjoyed a high delivery rate since coming to GR.

Why is email so important to your business as a marketing channel?

Because it allows us to build real relationships with those who haven’t yet chosen to purchase a membership to our site. Sending a regular ezine keeps them as “part of the family” and gives us the opportunity to convert them to paying customers at some point down the line. It’s also an excellent tool for “pass alongs” as many of our ezine readers forward the newsletter to friends.

What is the biggest mistake people make in email marketing and how can it be avoided?

Too much selling, not enough content. If you can provide real value, folks will stick around for the sales pitch. If all you do is pitch, they’ll unsubscribe, and with good reason.

If you could give one email marketing tip to others, what would it be?

Have a personality. Connect with people on a human level and let them see something of your real self (or your brand’s “real self”). And give more value than they can possibly expect — they’ll return the favor by giving you their business.

MarketingSherpa Email Summit – the world’s largest research based email marketing event – takes place February 7-10 in Las Vegas. We’ll be there video-interviewing the top industry thinkers. You can help us ask the right questions – and win a Bloggie Touch camera.

Email marketing’s top experts – in the hotseat!

The Marketing Sherpa Email Summit will host top email brains for the four days of the conference in Las Vegas. The names include Brian Solis, Justin Bridegan, Flint McGlaughlin, Brian Clarke and others.

GetResponse Community Manager Jim Ducharme is taking a video camera down to Las Vegas to interview the keynote speakers and talk about email marketing (and a lot more). His videos will be posted on our special contest site devoted to the event.

Get answers to YOUR questions

To make the interviews as relevant as possible, we want you to participate by helping us make a list of questions you’d like Jim to ask during the interviews.

Enter to win

We’ve even come up with a contest in which you can win a Sony Bloggie Touch camera, so you can make your own videos and instantly upload them to your blog or social network.

Here’s how the contest works.

You gotta Tweet it to win it

Starting today and running until February 6, (the day before the conference begins,) we’ll be waiting for your questions on Twitter. Be sure to include a #getresponse hashtag in your tweet, so you’re eligible to win the prize.

We’ll be collecting your tweets meticulously. Then we’ll have a random drawing and announce the winner on Twitter on the morning the conference starts – February 7. Be sure to stay tuned to our Twitter profile.

All the tweets with the #getresponse hashtag will display in a live feed on our contest site, so you’ll have an opportunity to track the questions easily. You can also tweet directly from the site. The number of questions a person asks is virtually unlimited, but listen gang, let’s keep it within reason

Stay tuned for video interviews

So, if there’s anything you’ve always wanted to ask the top email brains, or you’re looking for answers, or you just want to share in this event, we’re waiting impatiently for your suggestions. And don’t forget to watch us after the contest ends to see the videos (and perhaps hear your questions asked.)

Let the tweeting begin!

Contest rules and details are posted on our special contest site. To visit the contest site and start tweeting, click HERE.

In response to our customers’ demand GetResponse has jus launched integrations with 7 new e-commerce, CRM and CMS platforms to improve synchronization and data flow all now available straight from your account.

GetResponse integrations available in your account now include the following 7 platforms:

Magento

Zoho

Highrise

Shopify

Batchbook

Formstack

Freshbooks

Fully-integrated platforms

Some of them – Magento, Batchbook, Zoho and Shopify – are available from the Integrations panel in the My account tab. One-time authorization of of these platforms in your account allows immediate import of up to 10,000 contacts, followed by weekly automatic updates of your lists with fresh contacts.

Import-only platforms

Highrise, Formstack and Freshbook integrations are located in panel Import contacts > Another service. Again, the import is contingent upon authorization of your account.

The GetResponse system doesn’t run automated updates for these three platforms. However, the import volume is unlimited (it will import all your contacts from one account to another) and you can update your lists by running the import procedure whenever you wish.

Integration + import

Two of the platforms – Magento and Batchbook (as well as previously introduced Salesforce) – are available in both Imports and Integrations. If you have only a temporary account in one of these platforms, or are planning to cancel it once your campaign is over, you don’t need to integrate your account permanently. You can use one-time import authorization in the Import contacts panel.

Get the full details

Detailed information regarding all the new add-ons is available at GetResponse App Center, a directory of applications and software that interface with GetResponse.

Stay tuned for more software integrations

The new integrations were developed in response to a huge demand and countless inquiries from you – our customers – and definitely will be followed by more.

So if you’d like to see GetResponse integrate with any software you use to run your business – give us a shout, and we’ll put it on our “To integrate” list.

This week GetResponse launched website versions specifically to serve the UK and German markets with new domains and sites: http://www.getresponse.co.uk and http://www.getresponse.de. Being a global company with over 215,000 users and customers on every continent, including 10,000 users in UK and 1,500 in Germany, we’ve decided to respond to the growing demand for our services in these two markets with a few improvements.

New fixed pricelist

The new British and German versions are intended to help us draw closer to our prospects and users in these two regions by facilitating order placement, plan upgrades, billing procedures, etc. The new customized fixed pricelists in GBP and EUR will no longer be based on updated currency exchange rates, thus they won’t be affected by abrupt currency fluctuations and financial market influences.

As of today we can offer and guarantee price stability to all our UK and German customers to reward the trust they placed in us by choosing our services. In addition, to say thank you, we’ve set our prices to be highly competitive and to offer the most for the least with the top rates in emailing market, going as low as £9.84 and €11.48 per month (unlimited outgoing volume). Our pricing model is, as always, based on the number of subscribers, rather then outgoing volume, and can be a fresh, new alternative to the “pay-per-emails-sent” model, prevailing in these markets.

From now on, based on their location, our users and visitors in these two regions will be redirected to the appropriate language version of the site.

Willkomen! Welcome Britain!

The launch of the two language versions is part of GetResponse’s plan to become more active in both markets: improve our customer support policies, participate in UK- and Germany-based online marketing events, and gain better knowledge of the region-specific marketing challenges. All that to respond to our customers’ needs more accurately, build stronger relationships, and help our prospects’ joint partnerships, tailor-made GetResponse360 plans, and affiliate programs.

GetResponse’s top priority has always been to give users a spectrum of options, so they can make their own choices. That’s why we believe our presence in the British and German markets will increase the range of available solutions, stimulate the development of online marketing services and introduce a new quality of email marketing for all the SMBs in the region.

So, Britain, Germany, get ready! Here we come!

Analyzing which direction online marketing is heading is not easy this year: social, mobile, online, offline – so many tendencies, dimensions, audiences and means of influence. That’s why integrating the many available forms of communication with the audience is the greatest challenge for the coming year. And that’s why your new motto should be: integrate and cross channels.

January – the month of New Year’s resolutions, strategic planning, creating outlines, redefining your objectives. Some love it, some hate it. Here, at GetResponse, we just couldn’t resist barging in with a couple of our own ideas on how to set a new course for the next few upcoming months. Here are the most effective email marketing strategies to help you integrate more channels and get through to more audiences.

1. Multi-channel integration

Email remains the top channel for communicating with adults – the most profitable marketing segment, with a high level of disposable income. However, for different people the paths to conversion are rarely as straightforward as: click to buy.

Example: some prospects first look for product and brand reviews via social media, others utilize the “search online, buy offline” model (or the other way round), some search for the best available offer via all channels.

Tip: Use all types of GetResponse integrations with social media to engage more audiences and increase your brand exposure. Try to connect offline and online: collect leads via QR codes or sign-up forms printed on receipts; get more customers to your stores via email alerts and coupons.

2. Segmentation

The different ways in which your leads convert means that you need to address them with highly customized offers and content. Only relevant messages stand a chance to survive in the crowded inbox environment. Those classified as irrelevant will instantly increase your unsubscribed and complaint rates. This is not just about geo-location, age and gender.

Example: A customer who’s just bought software from you might not be interested in your marketing offer anymore, but he’ll gladly accept information about available updates and add-ons.

Different groups use the Internet for different purposes and expect different things: some only socialize, some need alerts and notifications, some shop online, and others search for information. The innovative email marketer will need to respond to those diversified needs and expectations.

Tip: GetResponse one-click segmentation, available from the analytics panel, helps you define targeted audiences in the blink of an eye, with no expertise needed. So you’ll be able to exclude all the newly converted customers from your standard promotional offerings and send them only highly targeted updates.

3. Content marketing

Different channels and peoples’ expectations also influence the content. Brands should not only sell products but also to provide high quality informative or entertaining content that goes beyond plain-text product information. And you need their engagement to go beyond a one-time sale.

Example: Tell your stories using images and videos: product demos, event coverage, etc. Offer useful content: events calendars, downloadable and printable files, site maps, customer testimonials, recommendations, content that’s easy to share and forwards.

Engaging content that offers more than trading value for money will help you build brand recognition, customer relationships and true reputation.

And when handled in a creative way, it can as well quickly foster your sales too:

This year there is no escape from the need for advanced online marketing strategies. Your audiences become more demanding and choosy. They expect the right content to come at the right time via the right channel. That’s why you’ll have to double your efforts to keep ahead of your competition. The above tips will help you create a perfect next year strategy or be an extension of your existing marketing plan.

It’s only the second day of the New Year, and we’ve already fulfilled one of our New Year resolutions. GetResponse iPhone app version 2.0.1 can be downloaded from the AppStore – you’ll find it has a few amendments and updates that make it even easier to work with.

What’s new?

The app essentially has three important updates, which are the following:

Delete a message that is scheduled to be sent.

Delete a message from the follow-up cycle.

Review the stats of newsletters and follow-ups that you’ve already sent while previewing them in the app.

Plus we’ve added a number of fixes for issues you’ve reported.

Where to find it

To download the latest version from the Appstore, click here or update it directly from your iPhone.

If you haven’t downloaded it yet, take a look at this video to see what it can do.

Don’t forget to let us know how you like the app – take a moment to rate it (luckily, the app will remind you to do that every once in a while;)) to share your feedback with other users.

Have you tried it?

Have you already used it to send out emails to your list? What are your experiences?

We’re really looking forward to receiving feedback from you!

. . . one more thing

Oops, almost forgot Happy New Year!
