Everyone knows the popular TV series, Myth Busters, where the rumour mills grind to a halt and old wives’ tales go to die. There are email marketing myths as well which seem to have more lives than the proverbial cat. It’s time we busted those email marketing myths and on Wednesday March 13th, 2PM EST, DJ Waldow and I will do that in a free GetResponse live webinar!
DJ Waldow is the Founder & CEO of Waldow Social. He’s an email marketing consultant, writer, blogger, speaker, and co-author of The Rebel’s Guide to Email Marketing which, if I may add, includes a quote from yours truly.
Any email marketing geek will tell you that there is only one thing you can be sure of when it comes to best practices in email marketing and that is: “It depends.” As much as we’d like it to be, it’s not all black and white in email marketing and so you have to use your head and even your gut when choosing your path to success.
Because when best practices become gospel and dogma, you run the risk of missing opportunities and do a disservice to your subscribers and your brand. Sometimes, coloring just a little outside the lines is not a bad thing – it depends.
The law tells you what you must do and best practices tell you what you should do. Because they are not written in stone, these “rules of thumb” can become a bit blurred as over time people interpret and editorialize on the guidelines. The unfortunate thing is that after a while it becomes harder to separate fact from fiction and that can prevent you from optimizing your email marketing efforts and increasing your ROI.
You may not agree with DJ Waldow and me on the myths we decide to bust or you may want to bring some of your own along to stomp on. Either way, the webinar is free and we’d love to have you join us!
Here are some of the myths we’ll bust:
- The bigger the list the better
- Pack as many offers into one email newsletter as you can
- Hiding the unsubscribe link will reduce unsubs
- Presentation is more important than the message/content
- Never use the word “Free” or ALL CAPS in the subject line
- Never send a mostly-text or mostly HTML email – balance!
- Double opt-in is the gold standard. Always do it!
- Never use a popup or popover to collect email addresses
- Subject lines should be short – 30-50 characters is ideal
